Assertiveness – how to get what you want
The working environment can often be demanding and stressful particularly when there are tight deadlines or unexpected events or crises that need to be dealt with. One of the leaderships styles that managers call on in pacesetting which includes the ability to be set short term goals and objectives. This type of prescriptive manager style can work for in the short term when staff are expecting clear and assertive leadership.
The aims of the course
In this course learners will explore how healthy assertiveness at work decreases misunderstandings, anxiety, and burnout, and contributes to strong trusted teamwork.
We will examine when and how it is best to set the pace, give clear instructions and expectations. We will present a framework for delegating with challenging situations and people. Learners will practise in a range of training simulations and then discuss in plenary.
Course content
- What assertiveness is and why it is important to master.
- Develop the mindset that helps overcome emotional blockers to being assertive.
- How to remain respectful and emotionally connected to others, while being assertive
- Explore and practice the language of assertiveness through role play
Course format – what’s going to happen
The training includes a trainer led briefing and discussion in plenary of the principles and practices of giving feedback. Participants will practise using the Harrison Assessment and work on key Paradoxes: Opinions, Power (creating win-wins), Delegation (structure & collaboration), Communication – clarity & connection). The trainer will provide advice and recommendations after practicing the language of assertiveness through role play.
Trainers/ coaches
Lead trainer – Helen Dunnett – certified ICF coach, trains managers from Brussels based policy organisations and EU institutions on how to give feedback to teams and individuals.
Format – In-person and online
In-person: We bring people together in groups at your office or training centre in line with social distancing rules.
Webinars and online coaching: We run webinars for groups and online follow up coaching for individuals.
Online learning: We provide learners with online reading materials, tasks and cheat sheets.
Follow up training
We can tailor a programme to include Presentation Skills or Media Training. Our clients often ask for follow up training in Advanced Writing skills so that staff are well practised in developing both spoken and written messages.
