Remember these 5 points when planning to give feedback to staff
- Feedback is based on observations
- Be direct when you deliver the message
- Avoid ‘need to’ type phrases
- Avoid mixed messages
- State observations not interpretations
Use structured conversations to give feedback
- You should aim to give feedback about behaviours that can be developed.
- Base your evaluation around behavioural competencies not just on one particular project or activity.
- You can plan a structured conversation based around questions –especially in cases where you have to give sensitive or negative feedback.
- You aim to get an agreed evaluation with the member of staff (not always possible!).
