Media training: Tips to help you in front of a camera.
More and more of us have to speak in front of cameras either in media interviews or to present our ideas, policies or sectors to the world. We organise media training for a variety of organisations.
Naomi Lloyd, is a TV reporter, presenter and producer who has worked for the BBC, ITV, Reuters, France 24, Euronews and Europarl TV. As one of our trainers, Naomi suggests a few tips below to help you in front of a camera.
a) Beware of how you look
- What you wear is important – Wear strong, plain colours. Avoid tiny patterns.
- Makeup – Wear powder, but nothing distracting.
- Posture – Shoulders back.
- Hands – Keep them open, but not folded in front of you.
- Eye contact – Look at the lens. Make eye contact with the reporter.
b) Beware of how you speak
- Make clear sentences.
- Avoid jargon.
- Be mindful of your pace – Slow it down and pause. Quicken for enthusiasm.
- Stressed words – speak louder, higher, or slower to add emphasis.
- Personalise – what is resonates with the people?
