Here is a list of techniques that you can use to add emphasis to your writing:
…
Technique | Examples |
Modifiers | Modifiers are adverbs like “very”, “extremely” and can add strength or introduce doubt – such as “potentially”. |
Contrasts | The use of contrast within a sentence adds emphasis. Note the difference between “There has been a 60% increase in banks reporting risk over 10 years.” Versus “10 years only a few banks reported risk, but now 60% more will do so.” |
Trends that are graduated | Use modifiers to add emphasis to a trend “There has been a slight / rapid / marked decrease in….” |
Use strong verbs | “People are affected by limited access to health services” versus “people are suffering because of…..” |
Use of ‘what’ in a sentence | “What we see here is a challenge” |
Exceptional use of ‘do’ | “We are writing because we do have real concerns about the lack of action” |
