Learn the tricks of trade to putting together and delivering effective advocacy in Brussels.

The training objectives

The goal of this training is to enhance the lobbying and advocacy capabilities of staff, equipping them to operate effectively in the unique Brussels policy landscape. We ask participants to complete a pre-course training needs questionnaire two week prior to the workshop so that we can fine tune the input and agenda. These objectives are designed to ensure participants leave with practical skills and actionable strategies for effective lobbying and advocacy in Brussels.

The training will include the following elements:

  1. Understanding the Brussels audience and policy environment

Participants will gain a deeper insight into the diverse range of stakeholders, institutions, and policy drivers that shape Brussels. This includes mapping key policy makers, understanding the decision-making processes of the EU and other relevant bodies, and recognising cultural and political sensitivities that may influence advocacy efforts.

2. Negotiation and influencing skills

The training will develop participants’ ability to negotiate with stakeholders, navigate differing interests, and manage disagreements constructively. This includes learning proven negotiation frameworks, practicing real-world scenarios, and using mediation and advocacy techniques to and build consensus.

3. Developing effective engagement plans and strategies

Attendees will learn how to design comprehensive advocacy and engagement strategies tailored to the Brussels context. Key topics will include stakeholder analysis, message development, timing and sequencing of outreach, building alliances, and using a mix of communication channels to achieve policy objectives. We also explore ways in which we can use AI tools to enhance our research capabilities and to draft outreach communications.
