List of Techniques to Add Emphasis to Your Writing

Here is a list of techniques that you can use to add emphasis to your writing:

  Technique    Examples
Modifiers    Modifiers are adverbs like “very”, “extremely” and can add strength or introduce doubt – such as “potentially”.
Contrasts    The use of contrast within a sentence adds emphasis. Note the difference between “There has been a 60% increase in banks reporting risk over 10 years.” Versus “10 years only a few banks reported risk, but now 60% more will do so.”
Trends that are graduated  Use modifiers to add emphasis to a trend “There has been a slight / rapid / marked  decrease in….”
Use strong verbs    “People are affected by limited access to health services” versus “people are suffering because of…..”
Use of ‘what’ in a sentence  “What we see here is a challenge”
Exceptional use of ‘do’  “We are writing because we do have real concerns about the lack of action”
